Seafood Progress History
Daylighting grocer and brand performance to drive progress
Introduced in 2018, Seafood Progress is a unique initiative aimed at driving transparency and accountability of major grocers and brands to accelerate environmental improvements and human rights throughout global seafood supply chains.
Consumers, investors, and governments, are increasingly expecting companies to be transparent and to act on their environmental and social impacts. However, when it comes to the global seafood industry, opaque supply chains continue to hide numerous problems, including human rights abuses, illegal and unregulated fishing, and environmental degradation – all of which can make their way on to grocery shelves.
While seafood sustainability and human rights policies are now common practice, turning words into action, at a pace that is necessary, is often where companies stall. Greater accountability by companies along the seafood supply chain is needed, particularly with major grocers and seafood brands who hold significant influence over consumer choices and the economic power within the seafood supply chain to drive suppliers upstream to make environmental and social improvements.

A shift to transparency and accountability by companies
Since 2018, Seafood Progress has daylighted and tracked major grocer and seafood brands performance. In response, we activated thousands of consumers to send letters calling for companies to take action to improve their seafood supply chains. As a result, companies have made several improvements. Yet much work remains to be done by companies as evident in SeaChoice’s most recent Seafood Progress report.
