Best Choice Some Concerns Avoid

SPECIES

Mahi Mahi

SCIENTIFIC NAME Coryphaena hippurus
MARKET NAMES

Dolphinfish, Dorado

SUSHI NAMES

N/A

DESCRIPTION

Mahi mahi are top-level predators. They are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters, though distribution is limited to ocean temperature above 20°C. Mahi mahi school according to sex and size and seek refuge under floating objects. They migrate seasonally in aggregates of spawning adults or schools of feeding juveniles. They also exhibit pronounced seasonal variation in local abundance.

Dolphinfish are caught off the coasts of North and South Carolina from May through July, off the east coast of Florida mainly between April and June, and off the coast of Puerto Rico in February and March. Mahi mahi are also caught in the Gulf of Mexico from April to September with peak catches from May through August.

INHERENT VULNERABILITY

Mahi mahi reach sexual maturity at an early age, are short-lived, and are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. They are prolific spawners, broadcasting thousands to millions of eggs, and spawn multiple times each year. waters. It is concluded, therefore, that mahi mahi are resilient to fishing pressure and conservation concern regarding their vulnerability ranks “low”.

STATUS OF STOCKS

Mahi mahi are classified as not overfished and overfishing not occurring. However, long-term trends in abundance of mahi mahi are unknown. Short-term trends of mahi mahi biomass are increasing, but these findings are highly uncertain. Due to the high uncertainty in the mahi mahi stock, conservation concern ranks “moderate”.

NATURE OF BY-CATCH

For longlines, although there are limited data regarding international bycatch levels and trends, the continued bycatch of sea turtles, seabirds, marine mammals, sharks, billfish and other pelagic fishes remains a critical conservation concern for the majority of tuna and swordfish fleets, which also catch and land dolphinfish as an incidental species.

HABITAT EFFECTS

The use of pelagic longline gear has negligible habitat effects. There is also no evidence that the removal of mahi mahi has resulted in ecosystem effects.

However, the ecosystem effects of removing large predators like Mahi mahi remain controversial. Overall, the habitat and ecosystem impacts of the mahi mahi fisheries are a low conservation concern.

MANAGEMENT EFFECTIVENESS

There are no international management measures in place
for dolphinfish, and international management of this species is virtually non-existent. Management in the international dolphinfish fisheries is thus deemed ineffective.

IMPORTANT QUESTION TO ASK

What kind of fish is this?

Where is this mahi mahi from?

Only mahi mahi caught with hook and line, troll, or handline gears from the US Atlantic fishery is ranked as a “Best Choice”.
