Coho Salmon

  • From:
    Farmed - Recirculating Aquaculture

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are land-based, closed-containment systems- unlike other aquaculture production systems that may discharge large volumes of untreated wastes into surrounding environments, RAS utilize a series of filters and pumps to remove wastes, therefore cleaning the water before recycling it back through the system. Tanks and buildings keep farm animals physically isolated from the environment and offer a high degree of control over both inputs and outputs, resulting in decreased effluent and habitat impacts, increased feed efficiencies, and little or no interactions with wildlife. Unless otherwise indicated by a species-specific report, all seafood grown in RAS around the world are a “Best Choice.”

Consumers beware: The vast majority of farmed salmon comes from open net pens and is ranked as “Avoid.”
