Mussels, Blue

  • From:
    U.S. North Atlantic
    Method:
    Wild, Dredge, Rakes

Blue mussels caught in Maine, New York and Rhode Island with dredges are ranked “Some Concerns”.┬áIn Maine, where most blue mussels are caught, fishery managers report population declines. In New York and Rhode Island, fishing levels are low, so abundance is assumed to be high. Bycatch information is limited, but dredging can impact species that live in mussel beds. Some management measures exist to protect this ecologically important species, but these need strengthening.
